An Inside Look-HGTV Faces of Design Award
An Inside Look–Our Design Process
We are currently a nominee for HGTV’s Faces of Design Award and this is a great project for an Inside Look to our design process. The project is complex, layered and site-specific, ideal parameters that when fully considered can make a project truly special.
This Horseshoe Bay Residence is a study in contrasts. Our clients wanted an elegant, yet practical design. They wanted a house that could host large numbers of people engaged in water activities but didn’t want to lose the feeling of intimacy. They wanted a beautiful, regional palette of materials and they also needed something durable and transitional. There were 2 structures on this hillside property — the main home and a boathouse. The boathouse was badly in need of demolition and was ineffectual as a “center” for our client’s day to day activities. The dichotomy of design: How could we create beauty, practical functionality, and intimacy on a difficult site? It’s a good thing this type of project excites us, our team saw great possibilities in the midst of these design challenges.
Our solution was to “zone” the site into 2 distinct places of interest, but still encourage movement between the main home and boathouse. We used a bridge to connect these 2 areas with porches on both ends leading into adjacent interior spaces. A fire pit, a viewing deck, and a putting green tie the 2 “zones” together and give the site a purposed but organic and flowing connection. These additional elements encourage movement between the areas.
We selected a palette of regional slurried limestone, natural metal siding and reclaimed wood to anchor the project. These materials feel elegant, fresh, and durable. Additionally, custom steel accents bring a further modern touch. The house is warm yet modern while still recalling traditional designs. Overall, the project is rich with places to be, to do, and to enjoy. And our clients are happy to call it home.
